Our take
Two drag queens and a trans woman drive a lavender bus across the desert to a casino gig, and somewhere between the flip-flop dress and the thong-clad mining town, it becomes one of the warmest films about chosen family ever made. Terence Stamp as Bernadette is the whole thing — dry as the landscape, never once played for a joke.
The soundtrack invented a certain kind of gay party and the costumes won an Oscar on a budget that would embarrass a music video. A few gags have aged badly. The bus, in silver heels, on top of a rock, in the middle of nowhere, has not aged at all.
