Our take
Alan Ball’s series about the Fishers, who run a funeral home and are all, in various ways, unwell. It is not a queer show as such, but David Fisher’s arc across five seasons — closeted funeral director, his relationship with a cop, the fights, the therapy, the adoption — is one of the most complete portraits of a gay man television has managed.
Crucially, they are allowed to be bad at it. David and Keith argue about money and jealousy and whether either of them wants children, like a real couple rather than a message. And the final six minutes of the series remain the best ending any drama has ever landed.
