Our take
Josh gets dumped by his girlfriend, works out he is gay, and moves back in with his mother after her suicide attempt. It sounds unbearable and is instead one of the funniest and most humane comedies of the 2010s, with a real gift for letting a joke and a catastrophe occupy the same scene.
Thomas writes mental illness without a lesson attached and food without irony — someone is always cooking something elaborate while the world falls apart. Four short seasons, an ending that does not flinch, and almost nobody outside Australia watched it. Start at series one and cook something.

The plot, officially
After breaking up with his girlfriend, Josh comes to the realization that he is homosexual. With the support of his now ex girlfriend Claire, and his best friend and house mate Tom, Josh must help his mother with her battle with depression and the rest of his family embrace his new found lifestyle.
