Our take
A semi-autobiographical comedy in which Mae, a Canadian comedian in London, gets clean, falls hard for a woman who has never dated a woman before, and starts substituting one all-consuming thing for another. Charlotte Ritchie is superb as George, who is not out to her friends and keeps flinching.
The second season goes to darker places around consent and what happened to Mae as a teenager, and handles it without a single cheap beat. Martin’s own working-out of gender runs through it and lands, in the last episodes, somewhere genuinely moving. Two short seasons, and it knows exactly when to stop.

The plot, officially
