The 1943 women’s baseball league, with the queerness put back in.

Our take

Abbi Jacobson and Will Graham take the premise of the Penny Marshall film and tell it honestly: a wartime women’s baseball league full of queer women, plus the parallel story of Max, a Black woman barred from the league entirely and pitching wherever she can.

It is warm and funny and specific about how gay bars, codes and risk actually worked in 1943, and Chanté Adams and Gbemisola Ikumelo are its best asset. Amazon renewed it for a short final season and then cancelled that too, which remains infuriating. One season, worth your time regardless.
