Our take
AMC’s adaptation moves Louis to 1910s New Orleans as a Black brothel owner, makes the subtext of the novels entirely text, and lets the central relationship be as toxic as it always obviously was. Jacob Anderson and Sam Reid are giving two of the best television performances going.
It is genuinely about intimate partner violence, told through an unreliable narrator being interviewed a century later, and the season one finale reframes everything before it. Gorgeous, arch, extremely funny in places, and much smarter than a vampire show has any need to be.
