Our take
Alice Oseman adapts her own webcomic: Charlie is out and has had a bad time of it, Nick is a rugby player working out that he is bisexual, and they sit next to each other in form. Animated leaves fall across the screen when something goes right, which tells you the register immediately.
It is deliberately soft — the bullying is real but the show refuses to dwell in it, and it is unusually careful with Elle and Tao, with Isaac’s asexuality, and with Nick’s mother. Later seasons take on eating disorders and sex with the same care. If you want low-stakes, this is the safest watch here.
