The post-apocalypse, and one episode that stopped everyone.

The Last of Us poster

Our take

A prestige adaptation of the video game, in which a smuggler escorts a teenage girl across a ruined America. It is well made throughout, but it is here for its third episode, which leaves the plot entirely to follow Bill and Frank, two men who meet after the collapse and spend twenty years together in a fortified town.

Nick Offerman and Murray Bartlett got an hour of television about a long, ordinary, quietly happy gay marriage at the end of the world, and it became one of the most talked-about episodes in years. Ellie’s own story develops across the series; start with episode three and you will stay for the rest.

The plot, officially

Twenty years after modern civilization has been destroyed, Joel, a hardened survivor, is hired to smuggle Ellie, a 14-year-old girl, out of an oppressive quarantine zone. What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal, heartbreaking journey, as they both must traverse the United States and depend on each other for survival.
