Our take
The Roses lose their fortune and move into a motel in a town they once bought as a joke. It starts as a fish-out-of-water sitcom and becomes, over six seasons, one of the kindest shows ever made — largely through David, played by Dan Levy, who is pansexual and never once has to explain or defend it.
Levy has said the omission was deliberate: build a town where the prejudice simply is not present and see what stories you get. What you get is the wine-and-cheese metaphor, "Simply the Best", and a wedding that made an enormous number of people cry. It swept the Emmys in its final year and deserved it.

The plot, officially
Formerly filthy rich video store magnate Johnny Rose, his soap star wife Moira, and their two kids, über-hipster son David and socialite daughter Alexis, suddenly find themselves broke and forced to live in Schitt's Creek, a small depressing town they once bought as a joke.
