Our take
Rose Glass drops a lesbian romance into a 1989 New Mexico crime story and lets it get genuinely out of hand. Kristen Stewart runs a rundown gym, Katy O’Brian is passing through on her way to a Vegas competition, and within a week there is a family crime empire, a body, and a large hole in the desert.
It is very violent and the last act goes somewhere surreal that will lose some people entirely. But the relationship is written with real want in it, and it belongs to the tradition of queer noir where nobody is redeemed and that is the fun.
