Our take
Joel Kim Booster wrote himself and Bowen Yang a Jane Austen adaptation set over one week on Fire Island, and the structure fits alarmingly well: a rigid social hierarchy, money, a rude rich man, and everybody’s reputation on the line by Thursday.
It is very funny — the Marisa Tomei of it all, the underwear party, Yang’s karaoke — and quietly serious about being Asian in a scene that treats that as a preference. The friendship between the two leads is the actual love story, which is the correct read of both Austen and Fire Island.
